Slowing the Aging Process

The body also makes antioxidants, one group of which are called Thiols. A study in the late 90’s compared the blood level of Thiols in people who were getting wellness chiropractic care (defined as regular adjustments for two or more years) with people not getting that care. The chiropractic wellness group showed significantly higher levels of Thiols.–JVSR, 1997:1(4): 15.

Anti–Aging Secrets of Costa Rica’s 100+ Year Olds

In an article recently published in the AARP magazine for May/June 2008 is listed 8 lifestyle practices common to the 100+ year old people in Costa Rica’s "Blue Zone."
1. They have a strong sense of purpose and a clear mission in their life. They feel needed and want to contribute to a greater good.
2. The water in this area of Costa Rica has the highest calcium content, which may explain the lower rates of heart disease, stronger bones and fewer hip fractures. High calcium content water is also more alkaline than our typical tap and bottled waters, which tend to be more acid.
3. Their families provide support and a sense of purpose and belonging.

4. They eat a light dinner early in the evening. Their traditional diet staple is fortified maize (corn) and beans.
5. They maintain social networks with frequent visits from friends and neighbors. They know how to listen, laugh and appreciate what they have.
6. They enjoy physical work all their lives and find joy in every day physical chores.
7. They regularly take in the sunshine which helps their bodies produce vitamin D for strong bones and health bodies.
8. They remain relatively free of stress by embracing their roots and spiritual traditions.

The Bottom Line

What if we combined the information obtained from the long-lived people from the Nicoya region of Costa Rica with research conducted just 10 years ago on how chiropractic adjustments increase the body’s natural production of anti-oxidants? It would appear that the best approach to slowing, stopping or even reversing the rate of aging is not found in a pill, potion, lotion or treatment but rather in living a healthy lifestyle with a healthy nervous system. Live long!!!
