Childhood Obesity-A Ticking Time Bomb (Part 2 of 2)

Some healthy solutions to childhood obesity include:
1. Encourage kids to exercise and engage in active play.
2. Reduce or eliminate video games and limit TV time.
3. Place them, and the entire family, on healthier diets, including more fruits and vegetables and less fat.
4. Restrict or remove "fast food" from the entire family’s diet.
5. Quit smoking to offer children a healthy role model, and encourage them never to start.
6. Reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption, again to offer your children a healthy role model and to encourage them never to start.

7. Petition your schools to include more physical education, with an emphasis on active games that involve even non-athletic children.
8. Ask educators to remove soft drink and vending machines from schools, and provide healthy meals and snacks...and you do the same!
9. "There’s no magic here," McGill says. "People have to eat less and move around more, although everything in our culture is against that."
And, ask us about our health development programs for children and adults.

The Bottom Line

Two simple but very important messages this week that go hand in hand with each other. Clearly, lifestyle changes are in order for most Americans if they and their children are to be healthy. Unfortunately, most of the "healthy" lifestyle changes advocated in the article above are restrictive...are don’t do this and don’t do that. But, to make any of this a lifestyle and to make it work, JOY must be added to the equation.
